According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, Labour Day, which falls on the first Monday in September, has been a statutory holiday since 1894. Its origins go back to “the first workers’ rallies of the Victorian era” (https://tinyurl.com/2jxspfjd). Of note, Labour Day is a meaningful holiday in North America because this long weekend marks the end of the summer; indeed, many schools start right after Labour Day.
