A Sackville man is offering a $500 reward for information that can help lead to the identification of the person(s) responsible for the vandalism (+ stealing) of the electoral signs of Ms. Nancy Mercier running for the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) in Beauséjour riding (NB).
Many thanks! May this $500 reward help our police in finding the responsible(s).
Merci bien! Que cette récompense de $500 à celui ou celle qui aurait de l’information utile puisse mener la police vers le ou les coupables.
Regardless of the outcome of the police’s investigation, Bambi hopes that democracy will know how to prevail (ironically that was one of the concerns of Ms. Mercier when Bambi interviewed her). May respect and tolerance of other people’s different opinions prevail in our brains and hearts.
There is some truth in all opinions. All opinions are worth being heard. No opinion should be shut down in a free society.
Freedom of thought. Freedom of choice. Freedom of speech. These are the basic values of democracy. They are under attack in our Sweet Little Sackville… and by extension in our Canada.
A few comments:
1) There is an email address for the $500 reward offer: electionsignvandalismsackville@gmail.com
2) There seems to be one constant in Sackville: no freedom of speech. A few years ago, I got “done” for testifying about Town Hall’s improprieties. Now we see political candidates de facto being forbidden from sharing their message by having their signs ripped down, and having restaurants where they wish to hold meetings threatened.
3) Democracy isn’t just about formal electoral processes. It’s about everyone getting a chance to share their message, and letting the voters decide. If only the second part occurs, this isn’t really a democracy. It’s at best a flawed democracy. Or a farce.
4) A shockingly large number of people in Sackville publicly support electoral vandalism. That must mean that these people are of the opinion that their own ideas can’t be sold on their merits, but need to be forced. There is a name for this attitude: fascism.
5) Does anyone remember the swastika-in-the-snow event at Mount A? Lots of hand-wringing was to be heard, and the police were made to find time to investigate an action that – while rude and crude – isn’t a crime. What we have now is an actual crime, that goes to the heart of democracy. Not a pipsqueak that I’ve heard from the other candidates, and the resources to launch an investigation are apparently not there.
That says to me that there’s only one candidate in our riding that cares about democracy.
Think about it when you vote. At the rate that we’re going, you may not have many more opportunities.
