Why doesn\u2019t the CBC tell us about it?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bambisafkar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Merit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5045\" width=\"222\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bambisafkar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Merit.jpg 334w, https:\/\/bambisafkar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Merit-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 85vw, 222px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Quickly, Bambi would like to discuss the following <em>CBC<\/em> article entitled \u201c<em>Academic says universities too worried about bad PR to deal with systemic racism<\/em>\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/kitchener-waterloo\/bad-pr-systemic-racism-universities-1.5629591\">https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/kitchener-waterloo\/bad-pr-systemic-racism-universities-1.5629591<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the <em>CBC<\/em> article above is incomplete if it does not mention an open letter by Dr. Haskell and Dr. McNall, in response to their <em>Wilfrid Laurier<\/em> President, Dr. Deb MacLatchy, claiming that her institution suffers from \u201csystemic ra<em>c<\/em>i<em>s<\/em>m\u201d. You can read this excellent letter here:  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JqFKhEQ28d?amp=1\" target=\"_blank\">bit.ly\/2ZgGmEu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, Dr. Kofi Campbell, Vice-President Academic and Dean of <em>Renison University College<\/em>, featured in the <em>CBC<\/em> article today wrote about this topic in May, 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-university-affairs\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"56lmXZJPy1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityaffairs.ca\/opinion\/in-my-opinion\/why-dont-canadian-universities-hire-more-racialized-and-indigenous-senior-administrators\/\">Why don\u2019t Canadian universities hire more racialized and Indigenous senior administrators?<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Why don\u2019t Canadian universities hire more racialized and Indigenous senior administrators?&#8221; &#8212; University Affairs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.universityaffairs.ca\/opinion\/in-my-opinion\/why-dont-canadian-universities-hire-more-racialized-and-indigenous-senior-administrators\/embed\/#?secret=56lmXZJPy1\" data-secret=\"56lmXZJPy1\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not the least, merit\u2013AND merit ONLY\u2013is what should\nmatter the most in a hiring process, whether it is for a private company or for\na university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its aspiration for more justice, Canada must not get\ninto the trap of quotas, as Lebanon has sadly done with religious affiliations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada can ensure equality of opportunities for all (winning\nconditions of success) without falling into the trap of thinking that equality of\ncareer outcomes is desirable or realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not do a favour to people of a certain minority by\nletting them think (or letting us think) that they earned their position because\nof quotas and not of merit. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bambi is convinced of the above, especially after\nseeing the outcome of a quota-based system: Sectarianism failed everyone in the\nLebanese public and semi-public sectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There too, initially, the idea was meant to be a noble\nand fair one to citizens from all their diverse groups.
