Why can\u2019t our federation (politicians, judges, media,\netc.) understand that there are two main cultural approaches to secularism:\nMulticulturalism and secularism (la\u00efcit\u00e9), like many European countries (Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s\nversion is much milder than the French one). Both have merits and both have potential\nflaws. What Bambi likes about the former is that it works\u2026 but only up to a certain\npoint. Then, perhaps a lucid re-commitment to unity would be needed to avoid any\nexcesses. What Bambi likes about the latter is the universalism underlying it (e.g.,\nthe French Liberty, Equality, Fraternity). Both provide protection to\n(religious or non-religious) minorities in different ways. Not better, not\nworse. Just different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To come back to Bill 21, Bambi is not a lawyer to understand\nthe legal justification behind this judge\u2019s odd decision of today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bambi only understands that the same laws must be above\nall citizens, for fairness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, what kind of message will we give to newcomers\nto Qu\u00e9bec? You can teach in this school with your religious symbol on, but not\nin the other one, perhaps in the same neighbourhood? Does that make any sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Bambi wrote in an earlier post: \u201cwhy would a\nMuslim friend from <\/em>Nova Scotia<\/em>\nquickly express respect of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s choices when Bambi told him about this\nforthcoming bill (his veiled cousin was considering immigrating to Qu\u00e9bec from\nLebanon)<\/em>\u201d? Why not the media and this judge from Qu\u00e9bec? Is he impartial,\none cannot help not to wonder? Or is he convinced that this is wise conclusion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story is making Bambi think of a conversation she\nhad yesterday with a wise loved one in Beirut who told her that he hopes he is\nwrong, but there seems to be an attempt to divide the Lebanese judicial system\n(everything else is already sadly divided, they both joked). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is sad to see us going down this road in our Canada:\nMore divisions in our society. Bravo to Qu\u00e9bec for clearly saying: Non merci<\/em>.\nThere will be an appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude this post, contrary to Dr. Amir Attaran\u2019s tweet on this matter: No, the nation of Qu\u00e9bec is not \u201cbackwards\u201d<\/em>. How sad yet not surprising to see this clever lawyer\/professor being so disrespectful of La Belle Province. \u00a0Once again, Bambi will repeat that he has the right to be impolite toward Qu\u00e9bec or not liking it. As shown below, despite all his unkind remarks, Bambi has defended his right to freedom of speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
