It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife\u201d.<\/em><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gibran would be turning in his grave right now if he reads about Oxford University\u2019s words on how classical music is \u201c<em>too white<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>colonialist<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, this story is real, as reported by several international media today. One of them is an article by Ms. Sophie Durocher in the \u201c<em>Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/em>\u201d entitled \u201c<em>Music is racist<\/em>\u201d [\u201c<em>La musique est raciste<\/em>\u201d]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2021\/03\/31\/la-musique-est-raciste\">https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2021\/03\/31\/la-musique-est-raciste<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Bambi will present a quick translation of this article. Second, she will share comments of a famous musician and three readers of a French newspaper. Thankfully, they all still have common sense (increasingly rare in today\u2019s world of virtue signalling and woke self-flagellation). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u201cBritish newspaper The Telegraph got hold of a report from Oxford University claiming that undergraduate classical music classes are too white and colonialist &#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Try to read\nthe following sentences without laughing &#8230; and without choking on your\ncoffee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>TOO MANY\nWHITE NOTES?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Oxford\nUniversity School of Music is considering the possibility of modifying its\ncourses to tackle white hegemony.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>University employees see the university curriculum as &#8220;complicit in white supremacism&#8221; in the wake of the # Black-LivesMatter movement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Professors consider musical scores to be \u201ccolonialist\u201d and believe that the content of lessons should be \u201cdecolonized\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Professors claim that the way of transcribing music &#8220;has not shaken off its connection to its colonial past&#8221; and that to keep it in its current state would be &#8220;a slap in the face for students of colour.&#8221; Music writing needs to be reformed to be more \u201cinclusive\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Oxford professors say classes are too focused on &#8220;the music of white European men from the days of slavery,&#8221; such as Beethoven and Mozart.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Some teachers have also suggested that we stop requiring the mastery of certain classical music techniques, such as piano or conducting, because these lessons are too focused on \u201cwhite European music\u201d and \u201ccause great distress to colored students\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Professors\ndemand that certain courses on Schubert or Guillaume de Machaut be deleted in\nfavour of lessons in African music or popular music. &#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>No, these\nquotes are not taken from a comedy magazine or a science fiction novel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I remind you\nthat Oxford is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The only\nquestion we have to ask ourselves when we talk about music is that of\nexcellence. Is this composer brilliant or ordinary, did he bring something new\nto the music?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>That his\nmusic was composed in the middle of a period of slavery tells us what about the\ncomposer&#8217;s talent?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We still\nlisten to Beethoven, Mozart and Bach because their music transcends the ages!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Is Mozart\nless of a genius because he&#8217;s white? Is his music less grandiose because he was\nborn in Salzburg on January 27, 1756?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If he had\nbeen born in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in 1983, could his Piano Concert No. 23\nhave been taught in Oxford? Would that have caused less &#8220;distress&#8221; to\n&#8220;students of colour&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Woke &#8220;culture&#8221; attacks all forms of culture.
